As for me, I am a Christian, but I consider myself to be more of a "spiritual" person, as opposed to a "religious" person. Two spiritual experiences that work for me have been connecting with nature and spending quiet time in solitude. What do I mean by "connecting with nature?" I mean things like going for a walk in the park or a walk on the beach. Making sure you exercise is another change that can be made. It's not even necessary to join a gym or buy expensive equipment. You could add 30 minutes of exercise three or four times per week by going for a walk in the park, or working out with an instructor via YouTube...for free! The last change I'm going to mention here is getting enough sleep. Years ago I used to get up in the middle of the night to do work on my computer, etc. because I could not sleep. For the past several years, I have encouraged my family members and friends not to buy me tangible "gifts." Even the love of my life knows that I have all the "material stuff" that I want and need, and that I prefer not to add more "stuff" when holidays roll around. Instead of giving me a gift, he and I celebrate holidays in other ways. For example, we take a weekend getaway, cook dinner for each other, or send fresh flowers, which have a lifespan and can be discarded once they are wilted. Additionally, I am very careful about what I accept from generous clients who offer me things that they don't want. I definitely take advantage of this perk that comes with my job, and this is the reason why I don't really want for anything when it comes to material belongings. I took these practices on as a result of working with people to de-clutter their homes for the past 10+ years, and seeing the amount of "stuff" they've accumulated, and struggle to get rid of.

Over these years, I have gone into hundreds of homes, working with clients to de-clutter various spaces. I've lost count of how many times I've come across gifts with the wrapping paper still on them, having never been opened by the recipients. I also see the significant number of clients who have little knick knacks that were brought back to them by friends who had been on vacation, tons of little favors from weddings and other events, and gifts given by loved ones with good intentions that were opened, but yet, never used.

In this article, I want to share with you some gift ideas that would be very useful to the people you love if given to them, but that don't add anything to their physical space. Based on my experience, these suggestions have worked out very well:

1) Stock: My grandson will be three years old next month, and for Christmas and birthdays, I never add to his collection of toys. Instead, I ask his mom if he needs clothes or shoes, and if he doesn't, I buy him a share of stock. I use a company called Computershare to do this, as they have a minimum investment amount of $25, which is very doable. Through this company, you can purchase the stock of major corporations, such as McDonald's, Verizon, Walmart and Intel.

2) A gym membership: This is a great idea for someone who is serious about their health and well-being, or someone who exercises regularly. I do not recommend purchasing this for someone who is not active or who you know will probably not use it. In those cases it would be a waste of money.

You may have heard of the so called "myth" indicating that if you go into the grocery store while you are hungry, you will overspend because of your state of mind. I happen to believe this to be true. But there's also another "rule" I follow which indicates that it's just as dangerous to go into a grocery store without a shopping list. As a practitioner who spends much of my time supporting clients in getting and staying organized, and increasing their productivity, I always advise my clients against this.

Shopping without a list can lead to impulse purchases that aren't needed, as well as forgetting to purchase items that initially triggered the visit to the grocery store. Additionally, according to Reuters Health, there is definitely a link between the practice of shopping with a list, the quality of food purchased, and overall health.

There are numerous studies surveying food shoppers who use a shopping list vs. those who do not. These kind of studies point to the relationship between this practice, BMI and health conditions of household members. One study conducted by a credible source was the Pittsburgh Hill Research on Eating, Shopping & Health/PHRESH Study. This study involved interviews, diet assessments and a collection of some medical data, including height and weight. The results revealed that a definite underlying factor for drastic differences in health and BMI involved shopping with a list, which controlled impulsive buying and affected the decisions made and therefore, the quality of food purchased.

In my book, "Straighten Up! 50 Simple Ways to Live a More Organized Life (2016)," I offer some tips on ways to create a quick list even if you decide to embark on an unplanned visit to the grocery store. One way, even if you have nothing to write with or no paper, would be to pull into the parking lot, think about what you need before getting out of the car, and type your list using the "notes" feature in your mobile phone. If you are comfortable enough with technology, you could use the talk and text feature, in which case your phone would do the typing for you. This method of creating a typed list works best for those of you who need for your shopping list to be visual. Personally, I like the act of writing on paper when I'm doing a certain level of planning, but a shopping list is something that does not have to be visual for me. With that being said, what I normally do if I decide to run into a grocery store and I don't have a list is, I simply record my shopping list using the voice recorder in my mobile phone. This is another tip that I offer in my book.

Little habits can sometimes make a big difference, so I encourage you to try one of these tips and see if it makes a difference in the quality of the food you bring home. I guarantee that it will ultimately impact both your health and your pocket book.

Usually, when I walk into a client's home for an organizing appointment, I can feel their sense of overwhelm. I can see it in their face, and I can even hear it in their speaking as I listen to their plea for help. I want to provide you all with a "day in the life" kind of description of how I transform a cluttered space. Perhaps it will help you to tackle that basement, or that catch-all room, or just give some insight into how you can go about de-cluttering a space of your own.

GETTING STARTED

Let's just say we're working in a particular room, a bedroom. I begin by sorting, just sorting. At this point, that's all that is to be done. You don't want to make decisions on what you have to keep, what you can donate, and who you can give certain items to. By focusing on this one step, it keeps you from looking at the whole picture, which would cause most people to give up because it seems like too much to accomplish. What do I mean by sorting? By sorting I mean to create piles of like items. For example, you want to place all the clothing items in one pile, all the books in one pile, all the toys in one pile, and so on. I always tell my clients to ignore the room or project as a whole, and to only pay attention to each item they pick up, and what pile it goes in.

THE DECISION-MAKING PROCESS

Once you have everything sorted, you can then tackle each pile, one pile at a time. Now is the time to go through each pile and make your decisions. At this stage, you should be deciding on four categories: keep, donate, trash, and you are allowed to have a maybe pile. Keep in mind that the maybe pile cannot, by any means, be bigger than the other piles. Try to keep the maybes to a minimum. The keepers go in a pile that will end up being a consolidation of the things you are keeping from all of the piles of like items that you sorted at the beginning of the process. The donates can be placed in clear or white plastic bags so that they are not confused with the trash. And the trash should go in large black trash bags. The maybe pile should be left aside to deal with when all other steps are complete.

PUTTING THINGS BACK

Once all of your piles have been gone through and further sorted into the four categories mentioned above, you can then begin to put the items you are keeping back in place in an organized manner. What I normally do is consult with the client before-hand on storage devices that can be used during the process. The funny thing is, most of my clients already have all kinds of storage bins, shelving, and other nifty containers that can be used to organize their belongings. The issue is that they have not been utilizing them in the most efficient way and are not maximizing their space.

DEALING WITH THE MAYBES

At the end of it all you will be left with that maybe pile. The best way to deal with this pile is to take each item into consideration, one by one. If it's a peice of clothing, ask yourself: "have I ever worn this? if so, when was the last time?" Sometimes, an entire season will pass and we will have forgotten about that pair of shoes or that dress, I've been guilty of that myself. But when two winters go by and you haven't worn that sweater or that coat, it's time to say goodbye. For other items in the maybe pile, if you've never used them, say goodbye. Try not to get caught up in the "one day" trap. That is, telling yourself that maybe "one day" you "might" need it. For kitchen items, one good way to make a decision is to ask yourself if you really need two or three coffee makers, or blenders or skillets of the same size.

GOING FORWARD

Now that you've got the room organized, don't be tricked into thinking that it will stay that way forever with little or no effort. That would be like going to the gym one time and thinking that it will get you fit for life and you'll never have to work out again. Maintaining organization in any space takes ongoing effort and upkeep. Even the clients who hire me to handle what they consider a one-time organizing project still call me back in three or four months for a maintenance session. Try researching space organization on the web for organizing tips and hacks that can help you keep things in order on more of a long term basis.

Who else is ready to say farewell to the year 2016? It was a year of mixed emotions...some triumphs, some victories, and some losses. But by the Grace of God, we are still here. Here are some events that happened this year that stuck with me:

- All of the talented gifts that we lost:

* Muhammad Ali
* Natalie Cole
* Prince
* Frank Sinatra
* David Bowie
* Gene Wilder
* George Michael
* Alan Thicke
* Maurice White

Also, I would be amiss if I didn't mention the tragedy of losing Debbie Reynolds, and then her mother, Carrie Fisher so soon after.

- The Chicago Cubs broke their 71 year curse by winning the 2016 World Series

- The death of Fidel Castro

- The January 4th and January 7th crashes of the China
stock market

- Donald Trump wins the presidential election !@#$

- Colby Bryant's retirement

These are just some highlights that stand out as I reflect on all that transpired.

As the year comes to a close, I encourage you to ask yourself the following questions. I do not believe in "resolutions." However, this process will help you to start thinking about what you're creating for yourself and your life in 2017:

1) What goals did you set for yourself in 2016 that actually became realities?

2) What goals did you set for yourself in 2016 that you did not meet? If these goals are still important to you, then make a new promise as to when you will accomplish them over the course of next year. As long as we are living and breathing, we can start again, and/or keep trying.

3) What are your top five events of the year?

4) What accomplishment are you most proud of?

5) What are the greatest lessons you learned this year?

6) Who or what were your greatest influences?

7) What were your most important relationships?

8) If you could sum up this year in one word, what would it be?

9) What are you going to do less of this year?

10) What are you going to commit to do more of this year?

I have been very blessed this year, and I am forever grateful for all of the amazing experiences I've had. Even though there are things that I wanted to accomplish that did not come into fruition, I am thankful for the things that I actual have been able to accomplish during 2016.

Let us start the New Year off with a grateful heart, a positive outlook, and a clean slate (letting go of the weight of the events of that past that we are not pleased with).

Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!!
As a Professional Organizer, I go into so many homes on a day-to-day basis, and I am always looking for ways to bring more value to the customer. About three years ago, I received a phone call from my sister, explaining to me that she had stumbled across a way to make some extra money by providing a much needed service to homeowners. Since a large percentage of my clients are homeowners, this is something that immediately sparked my interest. We set up a meeting that was very informative, and needless to say, in almost no time, I had joined forces with her in this new venture. In my mind it was simply another added service that I could offer to the clients who trust me, that would provide even more value for them. I became a NJ Licensed Public Adjuster.

So, you are probably asking yourself right now, "what IS a public adjuster anyway?" A public adjuster is a state licensed professional who: 1) educates homeowners on their homeowner policy...advising them, at no charge, on whether they have sufficient coverage, are paying for excessive coverage that they don't need, etc.; and 2) represents the homeowner when an incident occurs and there is damage to a home, maximizing their settlement by ensuring that they receive the highest claim amount possible - advising them on damages that are covered that they probably weren't aware would be covered.

Insurance policies can be difficult to interpret and can be very confusing to read and understand. Most of the homeowners I talk with don't even know the answers to some very basic questions about their policies. Additionally, almost all of them have had damages to their homes int he past, that they have paid out of their pockets to repair, after decades of paying their homeowner policy premiums. Why? Some are afraid of what might happen if they file a claim...some think that certain damages are not covered, only to find out when they sit down with me that they would have been covered. Some examples of covered "perils" are: wind damage, roof leaks, water stains, vandalism, smoke damage...and these are just a few.

The main reason why we are able to help homeowners get the maximum claim payment is because as Public Adjusters, we are educated in the field as a prerequisite to obtaining a license. Therefore, we speak the same language as the adjusters that work for your insurance company, and we can represent the claim properly so that it is not denied for simple reasons (i.e. using the wrong language in the documentation). We are also backed by a company that has an impeccable reputation, has a team of attorneys and other professionals if needed, and can help move the process along.

Dear Readers,

This month I decided to create a post about a topic that many of us struggle with, or have difficulty on some level...finances. I wanted to share with you what I've identified as eight steps to take in the area of finances that will give you power, and help you to shift your perspective about where you are:

(1) Interview your parents and older siblings about the historical conversations in your family regarding finances. We've all grown up with certain conversations about money that have been passed down from those who raised us. Whether the conversation in your household was "we can't afford it" or "you can have anything you want," the point is that the conversations were inherited, and not created by you. Learning what those conversations were in your household, and taking a look at what you say to yourself now about money is a very useful exercise. You will be able to determine whether you are continuing those conversations without even realizing it, or you may determine that you are telling yourself something different in an effort not to continue whatever those historical conversations were. For example, a person who grew up in a conversation of scarcity may have become a wreck-less spender as an adult. In their mind they may be making up for the things they couldn't have as a child.

(2) Calculate your lifetime earnings. Yes...your LIFETIME earnings. This is a very empowering exercise. It provides you with the opportunity to see your earning power with clarity. When I calculated mine, it was over $1 million! I felt very powerful when I saw that over the span of my life, I was able to generate that kind of income. In this exercise, you want to be sure to count EVERYTHING you've ever inherited, worked for, been given, etc. A good place to start is to look at your most recent Social Security Statement. It has your annual earnings from the very first job you ever had on record. If you could remember, also count the paper route or money your earned babysitting before you began officially working. If you are self employed and don't pay yourself a salary, use the Social Security Statement for the last year you worked and then use your corporate taxes for all the years you've been in business (or your personal taxes if you're an LLC).

(3) Know what you have! I've met so many people who have pension plans from old employers, and other retirement accounts such as 401K's and/or 403B's and they have no idea how much money they have in these accounts. I encourage you to look up all these accounts, order statements, etc. and add up all your assets. That would include any money you have in these various accounts, as well as your personal savings, bonds, CD's and any other assets. Your assets could also include antiques and collectibles....art...jewelry, etc.

(4) Know how much you owe! Sometimes we take on that we really don't want to know how much debt we have. Maybe what's behind this thinking is that if we don't acknowledge it, we won't have to deal with it. There's a lot of power in knowing exactly who and what you owe, even if you can't pay it all right now. Pull out all those bills...the credit card statements, the collection notices, any bills that you are receiving in the mail...even the ones you never open. One of the things that we do with our clients who we pay bills for and coach around financial empowerment, is create an Excel spreadsheet of all their debts, and keep the actual paper statements in a matching binder. Once you've identified all your debts, you can create a place to start from in repaying what you owe. About 15 years ago, at the age of 30, I paid off $25,000 in debt little by little. What kept me from paying it for many years was the notion that it was so monumental that I would never be able to pay it off unless I borrowed more money to do it. One day I had a revelation - I realized that if I created a plan to repay it all, each month, I could proudly acknowledge that I took action toward my goal of being debt free. Once I began operating from this place, before I knew it, I had paid those debts down to about $6,000. About six months after that I was able to increase the amount of my payments, and the last few thousand dollars go paid off in a much shorter time-frame. I had done it!!

(5) Determine your net worth. Now that you know exactly what you have, and exactly what you owe, calculate your net worth. This is a very simple exercise where you list out your assets, and then list out your liabilities. Your net worth is your assets minus your liabilities. And don't be alarmed if your net worth is a negative number. It doesn't mean it has to stay that way. The first step in changing that number from a negative to a positive is acknowledging that for right now, its a negative number.

(6) Create a budget. This is another service that we provide to our clients; creating a budget, and working with them to stick to it. It takes a little discipline, but its not difficult to do. One of the most important things about doing this is that you are able to recognize if your bills and expenses are more than your income. In knowing this, you will have the power to eliminate the deficit by either cutting back and decreasing your expenses, or increasing your income.

(7) Pay attention to your money. Our company uses a free online tool known as Mint. Go to mint.com and check it out. You set up all your bank accounts, credit cards and assets and it tracks your debit and credit card transactions. By doing this you are able to track your spending, identify trends, and see where you are being smart and where you need to cut back. You can even input the budget that you created in step 6 above, and Mint will send you text alerts when you go over your budget for any of your monthly expenses.

(8) Create a plan for paying down your debt. This is another area that we work closely with our clients on. Depending on how much debt you have, we suggest different strategies for getting the debts paid. You may have to start off small, and you can increase your payments as you increase your earnings/income. It is wise to work on paying off your debts with the highest interest rates first. We also suggest getting all three of your credit reports and ensuring that all the information contained in them is correct. Consider the items on your credit report as you decide who and what you are going to pay off first, even the creditors that may have sent you to collection agencies, but are not charging you interest. Also, be sure to create a reasonable plan for repayment, ensuring that your goals are attainable.

I hope that these steps I've shared make a difference for you, and help you to restore your power around finances!

Sometimes, dogs or cats will start going in the house in a particular area. Here are some helpful tips to help manage this stressful problem:

1) For cats, make sure that the litter box is clean. If you do not keep the litter box clean, cats will not use it. Make sure you scoop the box out daily and change the litter as needed. I suggest once per week.

2) If for some reason, your cat or dog has started to urinate or do any of his or her business in a particular spot in the house, this is the result of the enzymes that he or she can smell in that area. It automatically draws them back to that spot to do their business. What you need to do is eliminate the smell from previous offenses from that spot. One of the home remedies for this is white vinegar. Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, and then soak the area in vinegar for 20 minutes or more.

3) You can also use the spray that is sold called "Urine Off." You should be able to find it in pet stores, such as Pet Smart or Petco. You may even be able to find it in Home Depot or the local supermarket.

4) For cats you can also try placing the litter box over that spot or area, in addition to the recommendation in number 2 above.

5) Take your dog out three times per day...at least 4 or 5 hours apart.

What I've found is that, most of those households have tons of tools and systems for staying organized. But what they do not have is structures...structures in place for their children to participate in the upkeep. They'll have bins, book shelves, totes, nifty baskets, and many other devices that are so great for keeping the house organized. And no matter how much of these tools and devices they have, they find that they aren't making a difference. In these cases, I coach my clients to find ways to enroll their children in keeping their areas of the house tidy.

Here I am including some of the ideas that I pass along to my clients who are challenged by their children's belongings taking over the house or causing disarray:

1) Find something that your kids love to do, and negotiate. For example, if they love watching a particular show at 7, set up a time...maybe 6 - 6:30 in the evening three eves per week, before the show airs, to oversee them as they pick up their toys, put things away, and restore the order in designated areas of the house. Make this a requirement if they want to watch their show at 7.

2) One of the most common issues with number one above, that I hear from parents is: "but what if I don't remember to do this?" My answer to that is to put this activity into your phone/calendar, so that an alarm goes off and you are reminded when it's time to do it...and respect your alarm - don't put it off until later. This is an example of what I am referring to when I use the word structures.

3) Create a game or contest! I have a client who has twin boys who are challenged with making their beds everyday. I coached her to created a game where, if both of the boys make their beds every morning, Monday through Friday, at the end of the week they would be rewarded (maybe an extra 1/2 hour of play or TV time; or maybe a trip out for ice cream on Friday evening after dinner).

4) Don't allow the kids' toys, books and etc to take over the house. Instead, have designated areas (in their room, in the family room, etc). Also, make collecting these items from around the rest of the house, and putting them away in the designated areas part of the clean up time that you schedule.

5) Be an example! If your rule is that everyone washes their own dish after use, then wash yours too. If the rule is for everyone to make their bed when they fall out of it in the morning, then make yours too!

If you start your children off with these practices, and they develop a muscle at using them, it will stay with them in their
teenage years and beyond. The younger your children are when you start, the better, but it's never too late.
Sometimes, we have our entire day laid out perfectly, and one or more of the people we plan to meet with call to cancel. Typically, my first response to this is thinking that this time slot or part of the day is shot, and of how I could have booked someone else in that window. Immediately after this thought runs through my mind, I began to look at how I can make the best use of this time. Below, I am sharing some of those ideas with you:

1) Offer to meet via Skype, phone or web.

2) Keep a running "to-do" list of things that aren't urgent, that is separate from your daily to-do list. When you have a cancellation, pull out that list and take on completing one or two of the items on it.

3) Catch up on social media! If you have a blog, create a post; check up and respond to mail on your Linked In account; or update or post to your Facebook page.

4) Make some sales calls. I keep a list with me at all times of current clients, as well as referrals. I have booked some appointments that have really paid off, by sitting in my car making calls for a 1/2 hour after someone cancelled their meeting with me.

5) If you are a consultant like me, a good way to minimize client cancellations is to incorporate a cancellation fee into your client agreement. Mine is only a fraction of what my charge would have been for the visit, but it still causes people to think twice about cancelling.

6) Pick up your dry cleaning, shoes from the shoemaker, or those few items on your shopping list that you've been meaning to grab.

7) Visit the local cafe (Panera Bread or Starbucks are my favorites) and read and respond to email...for me, I always have plenty of emails to read and many that require responses.

8) Check your voicemail and respond to messages.

This list is a little short, but it has certainly helped me to maintain my productivity when someone cancelled on me at the last minute. I hope you find it useful!!
Determining how long to keep other documents:

Once your year-end financial statements come in, you can chuck your monthly statements

Utility bills need not be kept for more than 6 months; anything older than that can be accessed online

I keep my credit card statements for 6 months in case I have
to dispute anything or have a problem with merchandise purchased with a
credit card. Generally, items purchased with a credit card are covered
for replacement under certain conditions.

Travel Documents:

When traveling internationally, email your documents to yourself
before leaving for your trip. Be sure to send them to an email address
that you can access from any computer. Include scanned copies of your
passport, airline tickets, drivers license and if applicable, your visa.

As
you work through your documents, be sure that you shred any documents
that you plan to discard that have personal information on them (i.e.
credit card statements older than six months, any documents with your
social security number on them, etc.).

We
all wear many different hats, and struggle from time to time with
coming up with the best way to manage all of our priorities...between
home, work, family, leisure time...how do we balance it all?
Here are a few tips to not only help you get through the day, but to
help you get the most out of your day, and be more productive. These
tips can be applied both at home and at the office.

When
you start your day, write up a list of all that you'd like to
accomplish for that day. Identify the priorities on the list and be
prepared to shift things around, even moving some of the items to the
following day if necessary. One thing I've learned is that its nearly
impossible to stick to such a list exactly as it is written, or as you
have planned it. I've found that I am far more productive when I remain
flexible enough to deviate from the list in order to put out fires
and/or handle emergencies, returning to the list once the emergency
situation is under control.

Don't be afraid to
delegate when you need to. Many times, we are hesitant to ask for help
and feel like we must do everything ourselves. One of the true
characteristics of effective time management is knowing when and how to
delegate tasks to those who are available and willing to assist you.

I
always recommend to my clients that they keep one calendar. Having more
than one calendar leaves plenty of room for error - there's always the
possibility that you might forget to update one of them and double
book..or even worse..forget about an engagement because its not on the
calendar you checked that day.

Lastly, use your
time wisely....even small intervals of time. This one is my favorites.
Sometimes I'm amazed at how many things I have accomplished before
arriving at the office in the morning. For example: in my area, Sams
Club opens to business members at 7:30am, I often run in there at 8am to
pick up a few items before going to my office in the morning. It is
almost empty in there at that time, absolutely no crowds or long lines.
Additionally, I often run out for lunch a little later in the day when
most other people have already taken their lunch. This way I can handle
errands like running to the bank or post office, and the lines aren't
as long as they are around noon when everyone else takes lunch.

There's researching neighborhoods and school systems, figuring out what's important to you in a community, deciding on what to take..what not to take...what needs to be replaced, and then there's packing. Over the years I have provided move-related services to several people, and wanted to share some valuable tips to help move those of you with this project at hand through to the other side.

Whether your move is work-related, for family reasons, or for a change in climate, you may have already chosen your new community. But in case you haven't, the following is a great site to do some research on different communities. The site provides demographics on the neighborhood such as the average family income, demographic make up of the town, school ratings and more: http://www.moving.com/real-estate/city-profile/index.asp.

If you are using a mover, be sure to conduct a thorough comparison of moving companies before you choose one. Also, once you select one, make sure you read the fine print in the agreements and other paperwork.

The area in which I can be most helpful is providing advice regarding packing for the move. Packing can be an overwhelming task, but you want to be sure that you do as much as you can on the front end, so that you have less to do when you land in your new home. Here is a quick guide to help you with this task:

- You may have to purchase larger boxes, in which case I recommend a visit to Walmart. Their boxes are much cheaper than the boxes sold at moving companies, storage facilities and truck rental companies.

- For smaller boxes, visit your local supermarkets and liquor stores. In my experience, the people working in these stores have been very willing and helpful, letting me know what time to come gather boxes before they are put into the incinerator (sometimes its early in the morning or late at night). The liquor store boxes are particularly good for glass items like drinking glasses, etc, because they are compartmentalized from the wine bottles being shipped in them. The supermarket boxes are great for books because they are smaller and books are heavy. You would not want to pack a large box full of books unless you are a body builder, in which case it would still be very awkward to carry :)

- When you begin your strategy for packing, think categories, but also work to pack a room at a time. For example: when you pack your bedroom, you want to pack in categories like toiletries, shoes, small clothing (underwear, scarves, hats), etc.

- Be sure to label every box with not only what it contains, but also what room it belongs in.

- Make sure you have enough insulation for your dishes, wine glasses, etc. You can buy bubble wrap very reasonably at Walmart as well, but you also want to use resources around your home to minimize the cost, i.e. small plastic grocery store bags, newspaper, even paper bags and gift/tissue paper.

- In the kitchen you want to pack all the dry goods and seasonings together, and if you have any coolers, use them for the items in your refrigerator and freezer. Of course you'd want to pack these at the very last minute.

- Also, you absolutely want to keep all cords that are detached, with the appliance that they go with, i.e. printers, cordless phones, etc. You can tape those cords to their corresponding appliance so that you are not searching for them when you get to your new living space.

For the most part, if you work your way from room to room, remembering to pack like items together, and keeping the items in each room together for the most part, and labeling every box, you should be in pretty good shape when you arrive at your destination.

And if you simply cannot manage packing, or just choose not to, you can always hire a service to do it for you. My customers can't share enough about the difference we've made for them in their moving process.

Lastly, when you get to your new home, unpack one room or half of a room at a time. Don't try to do it all at once.

Hopefully, these tips will help make your moving process a little less stressful.
I also want to include some tips for the different destinations I've been to.

SAINT LUCIA: I'll start with my absolute favorite! While traveling is one of my passions, I normal do not like to visit the same place twice. I feel like it's a waste of travel resources...just my personal opinion. There's so much to see, I just like to take the opportunity to venture out to see places that I've not seen before. Even though I normally don't visit a place twice, I did visit Saint Lucia twice. What a beautiful Island. My recommendation for accommodations is the beautiful Bay Gardens Resort Bay Gardens Resort. It's located in Rodney Bay, right in the Tourist Village. The resort is right on the beach, and you could literally walk to shopping, restaurants, night life, and just about anything else you might be looking for. They even have a yoga studio there and quite a few salons for various beauty treatments. I remember having my locks washed while I was there at a nearby salon.

ACAPULCO, MEXICO: Another one of my favorites, and I have many, is Acapulco, Mexico. While I was in Acapulco, there was an earthquake that measured at 6.9 on the rector scale, and my cousin and I came out unscathed! We stayed in the Fairmont Acapulco Princess.

This hotel/resort includes two towers that I'm pretty sure I heard were modeled after the pyramids in Mexico City. One word of caution, this resort did not have coffee makers in the rooms :) You had to actually go downstairs to the "cafe" to get coffee in the morning, or have some at the breakfast buffet.

If you play golf, there's actually a golf course directly across the street/road from the resort. Also want to point out that these twin towers are built to withstand an earthquake of up to 9.0.

PUNTA CANA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: If you are one of those people who could do without all of the hustle and bustle while on a vacation, and you'd rather relax and do things that are easily accessible, you would love Bahia Principe Resorts.

This resort is an all inclusive resort that is like it's own magnificent
city! There was a train-style trolly car that you could take around
the premises because the grounds were so huge. I had a couple of spa treatments that were excellent - they had more than one spa on the premises. There's also more than one gym on the grounds, and about 5 or 6 different pools. There was a choice of about 10+ different restaurants, and most of them were included in the all inclusive package.
You could make reservations at a different one each night. And if you didn't feel like having dinner at a restaurant (there was a dress code at most of them), then there were round the clock buffets in several different locations. In spite of my efforts not to gain any weight on the 5 day vacation I took to this destination (I worked out every single day first thing in the morning), I still gained 5 pounds. I was pretty good with food and portions, but I think it was all the drinks :)

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: OK, when I visited Santo Domingo, I did so on a shoe string budget. So the experience was a little different than when I went to Punta Cana. Here, I stayed in a small resort in the inner city called the Acuarium Resort , but it wasn't a bad experience. We actually stayed in a condo with a full kitchen, etc. and the supermarket was right down the road.

Even though this resort is not right on the beach, they provided a daily shuttle free of charge that would take guests to Boca Chica, the local beach at about 10am, and then come back and pick them up for the return trip at about 5pm. At this resort, you want to be careful walking around the area, and be sure to take taxis if you have to go to the supermarket or anywhere else. Also, directly across the street was a house where the prostitutes worked, but we had already done our research in advance and we knew about that. I traveled with other adults so it wasn't really an issue, as long as we knew to stay away lol. There were really no disruptions or problems during our stay, and many others on Tripadvisor had reviewed it saying the same thing. However, if you are traveling with children, this is probably not a good choice.

PROVIDENCIALES, TURKS AND CAICOS: This was another trip on a shoe string budget, but it was a nice, relaxing trip. I stayed in a small hotel called the Ports of Call Resort , but it actually used to be a Comfort Suites and was under the Choice Privileges Rewards Program. Since I traveled there, they have now become independent and are no longer associated with the program.

This hotel, though not directly on the beach, is literally a 5 minute walk away from the beach, and they have the rights to beach access for their guests. Something really great you want to keep in mind, they have a gourmet market right across the street that is very similar to a Whole Foods. They even sell wine at this market....some good wines!!

At the time I stayed there I had recently started my journey of eating well and working out so that market was a Godsend. Also, there's a gym, The Athletic Club where you can purchase a day pass to do yoga, work out and enjoy all kinds of other classes and activities for the day.

So these are just a few of my favorite destinations, but I have many more in my travel portfolio...Freeport, Bahamas...Montego Bay, Jamaica....Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Please feel free to post comments or ask any questions that you may have about any of these destinations I've posted.

Often
times, when I'm planning dinner parties, I am asked about how the table
should be set for a semi-formal dinner. So this blog is
dedicated to setting the table.

Here's how to set the table for a semi-formal event, and I'm saying
semi-formal because this post will not include certain peices, such as
the fruit fork, the fish knife, or the champagne and sherry glasses:

The dinner plate (sometimes referred to as the service plate) should be placed directly in front of the guest

The soup bowl is placed on top of the dinner plate

The bread and butter plate is placed at the 10:00 position

The butter knife is placed on top of the bread and butter plate, slightly diagnal at the 11:00 position

The water glass should be located at the 1:00 position

The wine goblet should be just below and to the right of the water glass

The dessert fork is placed above the dinner plate in the horizontal position

The dessert spoon is placed above the dessert fork in the opposite direction

The dinner knife belongs to the right of the dinner plate, with the cutting edge toward the dinner plate

Note: The attached photo inclcudes a few additional items that I have not used in this posting.

Folding the Napkin:
Goblet Fan (to be placed inside the wine goblet): Fold napkin
in half. Pleat napkin from top to bottom. Fold the napkin back 1/3 of
the way on right (folded) end and place into goblet. Spread the pleats
out at the top.

Basic Napkin Ring (to be placed on the dinner plate: Lay the
napkin flat on the table and pick it up at its center. Once you are
holding the napkin at the center point, allow all points to fall into
place naturally. Insert the tip of the napkin into a ring and adjust if
necessary. Lay the napkin on a dinner plate.

A note about wine glasses
On ocassion, a client may ask me about the difference between a red wine glass and a white wine glass.

The white wine glass has a smaller opening (and has a longer slimmer
look) because white wine is served chilled. The smaller opening is
designed to keep the wine cool.

The red wine glass is round and full with a large opening, allowing the wine to breathe, in order to create a fuller taste.

I hope this post inspires you to start planning your next dinner party. Eat, drink, and be happy (-:

All year long, people ask me about ways they can stay organized both at home and at work. This post is to provide you all with a structure for ongoing organization. For me, these actions are prompted by the end of the year, and the excitement of the upcoming year. However, they are practices that I actually schedule in my calendar on a quarterly basis to ensure that I keep my environment organized.

Basically, the key is to schedule certain "events" in your calendar...occasions on which you will work on certain things around the house. The most critical ones that I recommend to my clients, and that I practice myself are as follows:

1. Wardrobe Day: On this day, my 13-yr-old daughter and I go through our dresser drawers and closets. We weed out things that are too small, or that we haven't worn in the last 18 months. For this, you must be strong, those pieces that are "kinda cute" but that you NEVER wear, go ahead and get rid of them...you're not going to wear them! We use two garbage bags, one for donation to Salvation Army (or wherever you choose); and one for trash...for those items that you'd be embarrassed to give someone face-to-face. If they are in such bad shape that you wouldn't hand them to someone, don't pass them off in a bag, just throw them out.

2. Junk Drawer Day: On this day, go through all the junk drawers in your house. Group like items from all the different junk drawers together. Keep them together in an organized way...for example: I always find tons of pens and pencils around, especially in junk drawers. While I have two desks in my house, one in my bedroom and one in my office space, which both have a mug with pens, pencils, highlighters, etc. I still have had to create a shoebox (the plastic kind) for all the extras. Also, keep small items together too, in ways that look presentable: I keep paper extra clips in a small jar (a baby food or mustard jar works); I keep safety pins in a small sandwich bag which I keep in the sewing kit. If you have one-of-a-kind items for which it is hard to find a home, you can buy a drawer organizer like the one in this picture to keep in one of the junk drawers for those kinds of things.

3. Book Day: Both my daughter and I love, love, love books. I recently started downloading my books on Audible.com, but there are certain books that I consider treasures, and I have a hard copy either in my office space or on the book shelf in my bedroom. Between the two of us, it
is very difficult for us to let go of books, but we make an effort, and we always get rid of a few when we go through this process. So you might be saying "what do I do with them?" Well, here are a few ideas: http://www.booksforafrica.org/books-computers/donate-books.html;

You can also sell your books on Amazon.com.

4. Kitchen Day: Go through your kitchen cabinets. Do you have too many take-out food containers? Do you have 10 plastic tops that don't go to any containers?? How many pots, pans and skillets do you have? What kind of shape are they in? Are there some that can be tossed? How many do you need? Are you fortunate in that you can donate some and still have plenty? How many crockpots do you have? Blenders? Bullets? Toasters? This even applies to flatware, plates, tumblers, etc. Get the picture??

5. Toy Day: If you have a little one, when they are out at that birthday party next month, that will be the perfect time to go through their toys and get rid of the ones they don't even remember, but would have a fit if they ever witnessed you trying to throw them out.

And the big one...the one we all need to constantly work on is.......

6. Paper Day: At my house, I only allow three file drawers: one for business files, one for financial stuff and critical documents, and one for miscellaneous stuff like health, education, etc. I don't save statements past 6 months (utility bill statements, credit card statements, bank statements). If you need more than that, you can always get them from the bank or utility company. As for my business files, when the drawer gets full, some get moved into storage, but I don't keep any business or client files older than 7 years. My storage is very small, so small that it only costs about $55, and I refuse to get a bigger one, it would only be a magnet for more stuff. After all, even though I'm an organizer and I live by my own rules, I'm still human :)

The bottom line is, this quarterly purge of paper prevents a situation where I have boxes and boxes of paper at home or in storage, it's just not practical and causes massive clutter over time.

Well I hope this post has motivated you to get your house in order for the New Year. It is always my pleasure to share tips and tools with my readers and followers, that increase effectiveness, and improve quality of life overall.
Wishing all my readers, followers and clients a joyous, prosperous and abundant 2014.
Creating peace and productivity

Do you find that you are impacted by these hindering experiences below?
- Consuming energy looking for things in your home that you are unable to find because they aren't organized
- Paying bills late because your financial papers, etc. aren't
organized, you can't find certain bills, and/or haven't even opened them
yet to know that they are due
- Spending money on clothing, housewares and other items because you
can't find the one you already have...somewhere in the house
- Walking into room after room and being reminded of the chaos...in lieu of experiencing your home as a peaceful abode
- Avoiding having people over because you are embarrassed about all the messy clutter
- The inability to generate your creative thinking - clutter
interferes with creativity, preventing the mental space for it, and
instead causing internal noise and confusion

Clutter impacts us in many ways, and most people are not even aware
of it. According to a poll conducted by about.com, out of 12,600 people,
35% of the people surveyed said they need an intervention to take place
in their home because of the clutter. The same 35% even said that they
avoid going home because they can't relax there with all the clutter
around. Additionally, another 37% admitted that their home is cluttered
most of the time...and they don't event attempt to deal with it unless
they have someone coming over.

It's a proven fact that people who suffer from clutter are often in
denial and unable to recognize that they need a professional to
intervene. Many of my clients tell me, when they finally call me in to
intervene, that they have told themselves for 2 years or more that they
can and will manage the clutter themselves. However, the more time that
goes by, the more the clutter multiplies, and the harder it is to
recover.

Investing in getting your environment in order is the most generous
gift you can give yourself. In addition to solving all of the challenges
listed above, calling in a professional to get you organized will
support you in everything you are out to accomplish in your life and
have you sleep peacefully at night, and happy to go home after work.
is experiment with different wines. By no means do I claim to be an
expert. I have, however, been to quite a few wineries over the past few
years, and some of them carry very unique wines that you won't find
anywhere else.

My favorite red wines are Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chianti. So we'll start with Pinotage....this is a
very unique wine that has a peppery aftertaste. The grapes used to make
Pinotage are grown in South Africa. Pinotage is excellent with
chocolate, and surprisingly, one of my favorite foods to enjoy with it
is sweet potato pie.

Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the first red wines I was introduced to.
It is a full bodied red wine with a fruity flavor. It has actually
become my go-to wine for lamb, pork and beef.

Merlot, which also has a fruity flavor, is not quite as rich. This wine actually pairs better with chicken.

Shiraz is a fabulous wine. Some of the best Shiraz's come from Australia. It goes great with corn beef brisket or roasted duck.

Pinto Noir is a light wine with challenging growing requirements and
is, therefore, not as popular as most red wines. If you want to pair a
red wine with fish, this is a great choice, particularly with tuna or
salmon.

And lastly, Chianti! This is the perfect wine with lasagna and other
pasta...especially pasta with tomato sauces. It's also awesome when
paired with roast beef.

My favorite whites, in this order, are Reisling, Sauvignon Blanc, and
Prosecco. On occasion, I will also buy Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and
Muscato.

Riesling is my absolute favorite and the white wine that I buy
the most. I love, love, love this wine with crabs or shrimp. It also
pairs great with chinese or japanese food, as well as curry. Try it with
a slice of apple pie. You'll love it!

Sauvignon Blanc is a light, crisp wine that is good with seafood as well....crabs, shrimp, scallops...even lobster.

Prosecco is a unique, sparkling Italian white wine that pairs nicely
with many foods..but the top ones are dishes with mushrooms, and spicy
foods.

As for the last three...Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Muscato, I
rarely buy them, but when I do, I normally just pair them with chicken,
fish or seafood.

I want to also mention a great recipe that I came across once at a
holiday party...a combination of Reisling, Chardonnay and Muscato, with
fruit. I call it my "white Sangria" recipe.

I want to leave you all with one of my favorite wineries that I
recommend that you visit if you are ever in the Pennsylvania area. It's
called Franklin Hill Vineyards, and it's located in Bangor, PA. They
actually make two wines that are to die for. The wines are called
"Bliss" and "Fainting Goat." Sometimes I purchase a case of each and
give them out as Christmas gives during the holiday season.
I hope this little wine-pairing list is useful to you wine lovers who are looking for suggestions when you visit the wine store.http://classieuxconcierge.blogspot.com/http://www.blogger.com/profile/09713167359293027051noreply@blogger.com0
